Yea, I'm pretty sure the end result would have been simular if the same thing had happened to a V under the same conditions. It's a "what if" question that really can not be answered.
Admittedly, I got my information 3rd hand from a person that was close to the investigation. While it may not be admissable in court, it's good enough for bench racing. |
Sad situation in any case.... you hate to hear about someone being killed while they are out having a good time. I have to believe a lot of the information about the crash was hushed .... probably a product liability case in the works... and they don't want to have any misinformation flying around... Other than the price....I can't see why people want to run Bravos.... every product site I visit has some sort of "upgrade" for those easily broken things. You never see upgrades for Speedmasters... or Arneson's.... or Weismann's... etc. I guess the fact that you don't need a trans and they are lots cheaper is the factor. Sad to think that your life can end because of some longevity issue. I surmised a long time ago that they were trouble since you had to "shower" them with water.... Sounds pretty mickey-mouse to me.

Like You, I'm A Stickler For Facts
Your earlier post implied that Pier 57 went into severe chine and rolled when in fact is was more of a classic stepped hull hook after entering the turn. Running on the ragged edge would be an understatement, that boat was always a dangerous pig which Reggie refused to give up on until it almost killed several people. I just watched the tape again, it's still one of the greatest Offshore racing collisions caught on video...... what an expensive piece of tape indeed...........

I think the question should be ...
Which is safer at each types limit ... big or small. I believe a V will give you more of a warning that things are about to get bad, where a cat, I think, gives no warning, it just ......... G |
My experience in the two cats I owned that ran 100 plus was for the most part good.
I had a 26 with twin 2.5's that crabed sideways on me at close to 100 mph. That was a very uneasy feeling, and I lost total steering input until I got out of the throttles and the boat slowed down. That was my only experience where I felt something bad was about to happen. I had another 26 with a blown 800 hp I/O that was always a very stable running boat. I had a steering malfunction at about 75 which cause the boat to spin out, but it was not the design of the boat that caused it. I have driven a 35 Fountain at close to 90 in very smooth water and the chine walk scarred me. My Cig has run 82 on gps, which I know is not very fast, but it has never felt anything but very stable. A much different feeling than the Fountain. I locked up a drive at 80 mph on the Cig and the boat continued to track straight. It is by far the most stable V I have been in. I have been in some smaller V's that have scarred me at speed as well. I am no expert, but I would take a cat at high speeds in most situations. |

I live right here in LA and kept my eyes open for any news and never saw any...Furthermore... would the same end result have happened if the failure was on a vee? I don't think so due to the fact that the engines aren't so far apart. There is a joke amongst pilots.... the purpose of having twin engines on an airplane is so that the running engine can power you directly to the crash site of the failed engine! |
Good question. How about a new thread.
Post your top speed in a boat. whether driving or not. My best is in a Top Fuel Jet 151 MPH. Yes it did!!!
We were on Lake Havasu in February breaking the boat in Before it went to HotBoat Mag for the outboard shootout. The computers on the motors had just let the motors loose from the break in period, so I did not have much time in it. The water was very glassy and I had been running the boat up to about 90 to get a feel for it. The boat felt very stable and I pushed it up to about 100 and it got a very "light" feeling and the boat began to crab. It happened very quick, but I still had enough time to be a little worried. We lowered the motors a little after the Mag tested it, and it never happened again. |
Fastest varified on gps 106 mph in my O/B cat. Ran faster in the I/O but can't claim it because it was on a gaffrig speedo (even though it was fairly accurate).:D
