I don`t know about ''stepped'' hulls but they did put a finnish on their hulls that would generate bubbles to reduce the hydrostatic drag.

MAYFLOWER AND STEPS !
 
I agree with BAJABOB about the MAYFLOWER having steps and I would also like to point out the MAYFLOWER was much faster than a BAJA 38 SPECIAL with a much lower fuel cost and far less maintainence.:D :D :D
