Although the wooden cats were laminated plywood, different characteristics on the outside, center and inner layers, the tunnels weren't strong enough to stand the pressure. If you made on that wouldn't break, those pesky v-bottoms could keep up with you. The boats were so comfortable, that the throttle man didn't realize that he was killing them. Interesting to note, a state-of-the-art Kevlar Cigarette racehull was $24,000 in 1982. An aluminum 38' Cougar cat was $85,000!

Brownie: so you guys built the v-bottoms on 188th up until '85 as well? Who designed the 33'/38' hulls?, thanks for the info: Matt

Not the 33' and 38'. I built the first 46' for George Morales. It was a triple Mercruiser, "Maggie's Mercruiser Special". That was the basis for all the smaller ones. They were all designed in England by Beard, Birkett and Clive Curtis.

Maggie's turned into Popeye's long distance boat. I think Jay at Castaline still has it.

Brownie: do you happen to know what issue of "Boating" magazine it was that did the test of the 46' Cougar against the Apache cat? Also, what ever came of the Alpha Z 23 that was a collaboration of yourself and Bobby Moore I believe, that was a great looking boat, any pics, thanks again...Matt
