has a slightly smaller display: 3.2 x 3.2 but with more pixels:320 x 320 and 256 Color CSTN
The 182c:
is 4.02 x 2.94 and has 320 x 234 pixels on
a 16 Color LCD
The 172c seems to have a few more advantages:
It boasts a 200mHz processor that might be faster than the 182c ... as it's more recent, but Garmins webpage does not say anything about the processor of the 182c so I don't really know.
The 172c also sends, receives, and displays positioning data with DSC-equipped VHF radios which I don't think the 182c does.
It also has 10000 trackpoints compared to the 2500 of the 182c.
Ah well,
I am trying to pick one of these units too and would appreciate any feedback as well.
Has anyone compared them side by side?
best regards
..and thanx for a great forum!

Garmin's have a great name, great quality and service to go with it all. In the end though, I went with the NavMan 5500 and C-Map NT+ chip, was less expensive and better screen display for me. The LCD doesn't wash out in the sun.

Had it for 2 years now and no problems, issues or complaints.
