Here's the news story:
Boat ride ends in timber
By Charmaine Smith Independent-Mail April 16, 2004 Anderson resident John Montgomery had his new boat on Hartwell Lake Thursday afternoon when things took an unexpected turn. The 42-foot speedboat ended its journey in a grove of trees with its stern on the ground and its keel split down the middle by a tree that cut through the bottom of the boat. Mr. Montgomery made a turn in the boat that caught him and his passenger off guard as they traveled near the Asbury Park boat ramp off Centerville Road. The sudden turn threw Mr. Montgomery and his passenger into the lake. But the boat kept going, state Department of Natural Resources spokesman Lt. Robert McCullough said. "The boat just shot up on the bank," he said. "The tree cut it down to the windshield. It almost cut the boat in half." No one was seriously injured, the wildlife officer said. He said Mr. Montgomery was issued a ticket for negligent operations. Lt. McCullough said Mr. Montgomery had the boat about five days and still was trying to learn how to use it. The boat’s kill switch, which should be hooked up upon launch, was not turned on that afternoon. If on, the switch would have cut off the boat’s motor when its passengers were thrown out. Better picture of the boat ??

my rule is anything over 60mph or "big water" and the Lanyard has to be attached...if it was in this case the boat would have stopped short of the trees I am sure...and what if the boat turned around and hit someone....thank goodness nobody was harmed..
