I believe Merc O/Bs only lock into position when you go into reverse. In forward or neutral they can tilt up in case you hit something.

If you remove the cords, you might have the engines slam against the transom when you jump a boat wake.

Ron,

I'm not too sure about that. My Bro's o/b's aren't bungeed and we've never had them slam the transom...and believe me, it's jumped plenty-O-wakes!....:D

In races those outboards are all over the place even with the bungees. I remember back in 98 a 30' Spectre came off a wave and tore the motor off the motor mount even with the bungees. Bungees also helped keep the motor from completely falling off the boat.
Overall if I had an outboard V or cat, those motors would be bungee'd period.

Do the trailer test to see if you can lift them.

Like I said, I'm no expert and I never owned a Merc.

Come on now Ron. We all know you're an expert...we're just not sure about WHAT! :D:D How are you?

Hey Miller, expert on BS maybe. Did you believe any of that crap?

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to going to Biloxi this weekend!! Should be a hoot! Wanna join me?

I wish I could. But, I'm getting ready to leave for a short tour in Baghdad as a civilian contractor helping in the rebuilding efforts. So, I'm swamped with stuff to do.

You do not need bungees on the boat. We ran 300ProMaxs w/o bungees till we decided to race. The only thing they control is the Ob's from fly up away from the boat at high speeds and reentry in rough and race conditions.

I'm running 2.5's now with 15" mid and can trim all the way up, lossen the bungees up. They do help in handling better. Trim stay's constant and resting on the trim pistons, they just need to keep it snug.

Your old race guy's would be able to tell ya.The Old Penzoil Team Correct?????

Pennzoil is correct. Thanks for the help all. I think I may try them without the bungees to see how it works.
