The 26 has descent depth in the cockpit. If you look in the Boattraderonline, you'll see a couple of 26's for sale. One has a few photos of people in the cockpit. Will give you a good feel for the freeboard.
I wouldn't say the 26 is "boxy". But the lines are more like the 32's. Traditional square transom, offshore styling. Personally, I prefer that rather than the molded-in swim platform of the 344's & Slingshots. But, both nice boats.

if you do not want steps and it a molded in swim platform is not what you are seraching for the 26 is the right boat for you.
The McLeod cockpit is standard, as many other thing.
