Re: F 350 Dually

I have a 2000 f-350 XLT Powerstroke crew cab dually 4x4 with 4.10 posi rear. It pulls like a freight train on the hills, and I've towed up to a 16K fifth wheel with it. I also did the big exhaust, intake and exhaust brake. Also did a Kelderman rear air suspension conversion- rides like a Lexus. The 4.10's are a little deep for running around unloaded. Cruise speed is 70mph at 2300 rpm. I get about 13 Mpg empty and high single digits towing 10,000 lbs. I could probably squeak 15 mph highway out of it if I drove like an old lady but that's not really my style. I've heard that going with 3.73 rears is worth about 3 mpg. I would say that if you tow less than 10K go with the 3.73's.

As far as weaknesses, trannys and torque converters typically last about 100K miles if you do a lot of towing. 2001 and later have a bigger trans cooler. Change the fluid ever 30K miles and you'll be in good shape.

Overall, the best truck I've owned! Pretty much trouble free.
Hope that helps!

My new '04 F350 PSD should be here on the 15th...

I have my '00 GMC 4x4 crew dually for sale fellas.....
454 with Banks Power Pack. Factory tow package. 4.10 gears, posi, SLE interior, grille guard, bed liner, diamod plate bed caps.
61,000 miles.

I really only pull my 28 Pantera with it. I have only pulled the Gladiator twice, and not too far....so I can't really say how it does with 12,000lb on the hook... (maybe that is a goiod thing)

$19,500....

Great tractor, but questionable for local runs. Doesn't park well and you have to go out of town to make a U-turn. Wifey will get tired of it... :)

Jim,

My '01 F-350 had 34,000 on it when I bought it. Bone stock (no chip or exhaust yet) I'm pulling 14.6 city/16+ highway non-towing. Just pulled the 382 to Algonac and back ... hardly know it's back there. Big improvement over the '94 2WD 3500! Call me if you want more info over beers.

You can't beat that motor, i put 175k on mine and it was still running strong when i sold it. The only problem i ever had was the axle joints went out about every year but i got about mid 16's for milage.

We pulled a Cigarette 42 Tiger with one from Miami to Vermont (1500m) in Late Feb. and avg. around 13.8-14 MPG running 80 mph.

I have one and i love it. Its a 2003 f-350 crew cab dually with the 7.3. It gets about 15mpg non-towing and around 10mpg towing 11,000 pounds. And thats driving at 80mph. I would recommend one to anyone.

Jim,
I just sold my 99 350 with 180K miles on it.
I had to replace the rear springs, front bearings and upper and lower ball joints.
The diesel took a module and some injectors in warranty + a cam sensor.

These are the only problems I had with all those miles and from what I understand some of them were problems with the early 99 only. BTW it is still pulling boats every day in Sandusky and running strong.

I replaced it with a 04 6L diesel and can't say enough of how happy I am with it. They have made some improvements that make it a lot more friendly as a daily driver including suspension and turning radius on the 4x4 (parking) it pulls the boat better than expected. I know your looking older used but you may find a 03 6L that someone is trying to dump because of all the problems that they had with the first 6L engines from everything I have read they have worked out the Injector issues and have re-flashes that cleaned them up. Hope thats not bad advice but hey might as well save $$$ on some one else's bad experience.

First picture new one hoopteed up. Second pict out with the old :D
