Just curious what engine you are running...oil temps and pressure....are you set-up to run that low of a viscosity..journals..oil pump...coolers? If you are running 11 qt oil pans and a high volume pump you may be ok with a Super premium Synthetic 5W-30 in a big marine engine.

Just curious. the lowest viscosity I have seen used is a
10W-40 Super Premium.

Illmor tested the Dodge Viper marine engines and found the 10W-30 for street was not sufficient to develop a proper film at constant nearredline use.. so they moved up to 15W-50 Mobil-1.

I run straight 30 weight dinosaur oil.
At up to 260 peak horsepower, my engines deserve no less.

That and the manufacturer recommended it before they went under.

Some very intensive tests show now that 5W-30 or 10W-30 synthetic oil such as Mobil-1 are equal or better than 30wt dino juice. If you have 260HP you probably have a 350 Chevy that could easilly take a 15W-40 or 15W-50 either of which is superior to 30wt.

Teague says if you use straight weight oils to use:

30wt for cool climates
40wt for moderate climates
50wt for hot climates.

If you go straight conventional he is correct in these suggestions. :D

Truly..I think only multi-vis if synthetic.

Otherwise..

30wt 70*F
40Wt 80*f
50WT 90*F
