Another dually thread
I know some of this has been covered in another thread but I'm looking for some more info. I had a 97 Chevy 1 Ton Dually 4x4 with a 454, I was very happy with it. I'm looking for a 1997 to 2004 GMC 1 Ton dually with an automatic transmission, 4x4, gas engine, captains chairs etc. My questions are these, when did the Allison transmission become available?, when did the engines change from the 7.4 to the 8.1?, is there a big difference in engines is one better than the other? Is there a web site that would have this information? as well as the order codes for options so I can make sure the truck has exactly what I wan't? Also does car fax accurately keep track of mileage. There is a truck i like with 40,000 miles on it and it is 6 years old, I would like to be able to check to make sure it's not 140,000, Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kirk

You have a PM.
The Allison didn't come about until the DuraMax in '01

ACTUALLY THE DURAMAX AND 8.1L CAME W/THE ALLISON IN 2001 TO PRESENT. THE 8.1L GAS ENGINE TENDS TO CONSUME SOME OIL UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT BOTH OF THE NEW GM HD POWERTRAINS W/THE ALLISON ARE AWESOME. KEEP IN MIND, THIS INFO IS COMING FROM A DIE HARD FORD GUY...
GOOD LUCK
