My filters are horizontal so I don't have the vertically challenged filter problems.

I usually take one of the 20 something empty quarts of oil and cut the side out, put it under the filter and unsrew. All the oil drains into the canister, then once the filter is unscrewed I put the filter inside the canister as well.

This seems to be the easiest for me.

A clean boat is a happy boat. Returned tools that are clean are just as happy and so is the owner. Warparty36 ... send your friend a bill or shame them into buying you some drinks.

I have a 500efi and I just unbolt the filter bracket and move the filter and bracket over to the side as for as the hoses will let it go and then drain into my drain pan.No mess at all this way.

somebody told me years ago about wrapping a garbage bag around a coat hanger for either your pan or your oil filter.

Never had a mess since!

I break the oil filter loose with a filter wrench, them remove the mounting screws for the filter mount and turn it over. The hoses are long enough to allow this. Place a plastic bag over the filter and finish unscrewing the it. Hardly loose a drop this way. :D

There's no need for all these "tricks" on an inverted filter.

Just loosen the filter SLOWLY and just enough to crack the seal. The oil in the filter will then drain and be empty when you remove it. Pretty simple! :D

Just did it two weeks ago and didn't spill a single drop.
