Re: 22 Foot 1996 Scarab, good?

I had a '95 22 Scarab for a while. It will go around 62 GPS with the stock 7.4. Put new heads intake and exhaust and it ran in the upper 60s. Lasted 2 seasons and spun the mains of the cast crank 7.4. Bought a ZZ502 from GM performace ant the boat ran upper 70's but was a handful to drive over 75.

My boat was not built as well as I liked. It showed several stress cracks in any area you looked. The cabin is really just a storage area. You cant even sit up in it. It does come with a mattress in it though.

The boat was slightly faster than the Baja 22 footers and handled the rough a little better but with the stress cracks I was always a little afraid of beating it through the waves. The Bajas are also finished out much nicer and the fit of the interio components is better.

The slightly older 21 foot Scarabs have a much bigger cabin and seem to hold up better than the 22s.

I think 20K sounds a bit high for a '96. A few other boats in that size range you can look at are ......

21 Superboat, 70+ mph with a small block, could be had for around 30K new.
22 Velocity, probably faster than the Scarab.
22 Progression, definitly faster than the scarab.
23 Nova, not fast but the cabin and cockpit are roomy.

Good Luck.

Also check out the 22 Donzi Classic and a host of other better built 22's.

Where do you get your info? My ID badge says

1651 Whitfield Ave,
Sarasota FL. 34243

I also have to take issue with you on the Classic. I looked at the Donzi Classic 3 years ago and was not at all impressed. Great name but they didn't take the care needed to make the lower priced smaller boat.

I loved my 96 Baja 232,, just sold it for 19.5 with 225 hours on it.. had a lot of nice features, anchor locker, pop up cleats, drop down bolsters, tabs, depth... And after getting rid of it,, now realize how nicely everything was finished.. great boat that handled the rough well for its size and did 60 mph w/ 454..

I also agree with those that think you can get a 96 for under 20K....even if it's as nice as you say. For that kind of money you should be able to get a much newer one.
