Tow capacity specs needed
Ok. Looking at heavy duty trucks and I need to find information that will give me the accurate tow ratings of various trucks with varying engine, transmission and gear changes. I have been to edmunds.com, motortrend.com and a couple others and they have the general specs listed. What I need is a site or somebody with the actual tow specs for used trucks. Example, I just looked at a 2000 Dodge 2500 with the 5.9 V8, Automatica and 4.10 axle ratio. What would the rating be. I know the gearing makes a differance. I would like to compare the Dodge with Ford and Chevy to see who has the best tow capability. Any information from my Boat towing brothers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

how much do you wanna tow?
You know the specs on my truck basically and it is rated at 12,000 lbs on the hitch. The diesel is rated at the same weight. When I was looking at the HD trucks, the rear ratio didnt seem to make a difference on the total weight rating, more on the engine RPM and mileage rating.

Would like to be able to tow 10000 lbs. Or at least close to it. I know you cant go wrong with a diesel but they are not too common. Found a 2000 Ram 2500 with nice features for $12,800. But it has the 5.9 V8. I know it will pull my Baja. But I would like to possibly use it as a work/tow vehicle. None of the sites I have gone on will give specifics as to tow ratings. They will give tow ranges but dont say what combo will give what rating. I'm ready to shoot this computer.

I know the 2500HD chevy with the allison trans and the 6.0 would tow that, and upgrading to the 8.1 or diesel will tow 12,000... I would say that the dodge could tow that.

It'll tow it, but that engine will be working real hard.
My 01 2500HD with 8.1 is rated at 12k with 3.73's. I think it goes up to 14k with 4.10's. The duramax is rate dat 14k for both gearings. I'm towing about 7-8k and wouldn't want any less truck or less power.

The dodge 360 is about the worst thing out of the big three's hd trucks for towing,I had a 99 dodge 1/2 ton ram w/360 and 4.11 gears. Aside from your heavier axles,brakes and springs that dodge puts in there 2500 that will keep even more power from getting to the ground,my truck was a real dog and got atrocious gas mileage,10-12 on highway at 65 empty,8-10 running hard empty (85mph),9 mpg towing 6500 lb boat and trailer real easy and more like 6-7 towing hard (around 75-80). It looked good but other than that i will NEVER own one again. It went zero to 60 empty in about 13 seconds,zero to 60 w/boat and trailer in about 32 seconds (SICK). My buddys 6.0 hd chevy pulled same load zero to 60 in 24 seconds and my duramax pulls it to sixty in 17 seconds,Nothing beats personal experience,Smitty
