Here is a true story.... A good friend owned a Top Gun for quite a few years. They would run the boat in big seas an never complained or had any problems, they loved the boat. The got a 42 Fountain with triples were happy with the speed but were never happy with the ride quality. The owner even threw out his back on one of the trips.
I think the best story he told me was one time comming out of Jones Beach it was so rough in the fountain that they stopped to put on life jackets...., then the water was spraying into the boat and they were soaked, a few minutes later the motors started shutting down because all the spray was getting the ignition modules wet. Meanwhile a friend was riding alongside in a 45 sonic and had no problems and were dry as a bone.
Moral of the story, they sold the boat that winter and now have a 45 Sonic.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I always had to put the cabin back together for them on the Fountain every Monday morning after a rough ride. I never had to do anything to the Cig on Monday mornings other than take it out of the water and change the oil.

Ain't ever been out run by a 38 Cig in some smooth or in the rough...but then again, mines a 42' non step(1'+39'+2') with more hair than the average bear.
Like it was said before...ride in both and see what your paying for, your the one that has to sleep at night. I know I do.

Can't offer personal observations, except to pass on what a friend said some time back. Here at LOTO you need a boat that can handle the rough stuff. Anyway he had a TG but wasn't as fast as he wanted to run, so bought a 42 Fountain with twin staggered BBC somethings. Anyway after awhile he sold it and bought another TG. His comment was that after riding in a Gun riding in the Fountain felt like he was riding on a skate board.
But hey, like many have said before try them both where you live and buy what you like. Good luck.
