Thumbs up Cougar us1 38

hello, i am a new user from germany, please excused my bad english
I drive a 1989 cougar us1 38 with 2x mercruiser 7.4 litres and supercharger.
The engines horsepower ist circa 490 hp. The exaust must be closed, because if it is open i cannot drive in germany with this engines my boat runs about 68 miles....
Now i want to change the 7,4 litres against 2x mercruiser 496 mag ho with 425 hp.
What do you think , with which engines is my boat faster , with the old 7,4 litres with supercharger and circa 490hp or the new 496 mag ho with 425 hp and full injection....
hope you will answer...
I wish all of you a great day goob bye and greets to USA....

Welcome to OSO Nitro02,
Where in Germany are you? Is your Cougar a Vee or Cat? I do not have the answer for you on the engines but I am sure someone here will, if the post stays up in front.
Can you post some pics of your boat?

Re: Cougar us1 38

you might lose 3-5mph with the 496s but you will have a much user friendly boat, unlike those unpredictable blower motors. i would go for the 496s.

I would agree with the 3-4 mph slower. What drives does your boat have on it??

Pictures????

Re: Cougar us1 38

sorry for the doppelpost, i dont want this, excuse me.
The drives of my boat are the old mer cruiser trs.
My boat rides on the bodensee in Germany.
You think that the new 496mag ho with the xr drives is better than the old 500ho 7,4 litres with trs drives??
Thanks for the answers

Welcome to OSO nitro02. Good looking ride. Out of curiosity what is the price of fuel per gallon in Germany?

Re: Cougar us1 38

welcome to Offshoreonly. i'm not sure if your boat will be any faster but im sure you will get better reliability with the 496HO package. nice boat, those Cougars are well built for sure.

Welcome to the Board!!!
Why not get the hp525 efi,s better performance. If you are going to repower
go a step up in horsepower the hp 525,sEFIs are still within the horsepower range of the old TRS.
Better efficiency and less weight.

If you really wanna have fun where you live get a set of 575sc with the xr drives and hold on!!!

Happy Boating

Re: Cougar us1 38

My dream were the 525 efis, but in germany at the bodensee the biggest engines you can drive is the 496 mag ho, an the exhaust had to be closed.... i hate the strict rules at the bodensee but i cant do anything.
Iam not sure if i shoul change the engines, du you think that the 7,4 litres with supercharger long doing her wokr, i mean the engines had 500 hour on it and the superchargers had to be change, and that cost me many money, so i can change the complete engines..... And what do you think abozt the old Trs drives??
