From what I hear offline anyone who stuck 496's in a new boat and had 502's previously are not as happy with them as they were with their 502's. If you never had 502's then you would not know or understand their position as well.

I guess 525's really have "taken the place" of 502's. Just means a bigger loan I suppose.

I believe both are great after owning both.

502 stronger internals for supercharging and more suitable for upgrades.

496 smarter motor technology wise. Fewer upgrade options. Closed cooling and easy to winterize. More maintenance free.

I would say 496 has the edge if you leave it stock.
I really don't have anything to add to the thread, but I thought I'd just phuc around, even though I've been instructed not to.

I know for a fact that when my 502 was stock (before headers and blower) I could take the same 30' Kachina with a 496 ho out of hole and on top end. Especially out of the hole, I'd be on plane and excellerating while his bow was still up in the air trying to roll over.
If their horse power numbers are true then the torque must be substantially greater in the 502 mag. Not only that it looks better(in my opinion) than that plastic shroud.
My busness partner has a 496 ho in his 27 Fountain, and I dont dont know if its characteristic of them but his goes through oil. Not only does it leak it out the crankcase ventaltion but it must pump alot of it down the intake because he is constantly having to add oil and his bilge is always dirty.
His boat was faster than my 502 Kachina by about 3 or 4 miles an hour but once again I could eat him alive out of the hole, and in the midrange.
The Vortech blower and Headers took care of that though............ Nothing worse than having to work with some-one who kicks your ass on the lake and talks about it all week at work. If he upgrades his motor and regains the lead agian, I'll be out boat shopping the next day........

Yea..the boat I am getting is going to be a contender. I am thinking a 35' Ex with 525's.
It'll be a 90+ mph durable and reliable...not many can beat that where I boat.

I wish the 496's did't look so "plastic" as well...I have seen triple applications and then you look at 502's or 525's and it looks like you have HP engines..the look of the 496 makes me think runabout and not offshore...too bad..

I didn't want to pre-empt this poll by telling you my brother in law had a 496 that only lasted 140 hrs before needing lots of top engine work...but I feel the 496 is not nearly the engine the 502 was and look at the price...
