What 27' boat only has 365HP ??
Progressive sent me a letter wanting me to get a boat insurance quote from them today so I called. Of course they won't insure my boat (no big surprise) so I asked him what motor in a 27' boat would they insure. They said up to 365hp, can you buy a 27' boat with that little HP??? Seriously 496 has 385HP right?? thats the smallest motor it comes with.

Just goes to show you they are just guessing at the gouging, and don't know their a*s from a hole in the ground. Still using HP charts from Merc packages last available in 1996/7...the 365 HP carbed 454 Mag. At the time that was a poular choice in a 26-27'er
Don't laugh, it's true.

I have a similar problem, they go by the engines avaible when the boat was manufactured. put a replacement motor in 454 MPI 496 496ho or a 502mpi
and instant NO insurance.
and instant NO insurance.

You might as well not have insurance then. If you have a major claim and they figure out that you have a higher hp engine than what is listed it will be denied.

actually they ask you the rated HP not the Cu inch
I have a 502 that was a Volvo test engine, looks like a HP500 in black
its supposed to be 415hp, I told them it had no HP tag they went through the roof and said we need the HP, they told me my 26 foot boat is not insurable with over 360hp. But I have found plenty of them with 454mags and 502s and even a hp525 I have no idea how they are insuring them

I just went to the progressive web site and in the fountain they will do up to 365 hp each in a twin application! They had no option for a single?? Dont know why, I would call them back and tell them. For referance they will insure up to 425 in a 27 formula with a single.

this has been brought up before. Pull the identifying decals and let them sort it out on a dyno...the burden would be on them to prove HP and deny you a claim over it.
So tell 'em "there's the boat. Go ahead and prove #1 that motor is making uninsurable HP in that boat, and/or that if this is the case, it contributed to/was responsible for the loss".
Easy to make a motor sick after the fact, though the better if it appears like a stocker.
