4 1/2 diameter hole 36" deep for my dock
I have a steel post pier and want to cover the steel posts with wood pilings. I can get telephone poles and cut them to 26" length but who can bore a 4 1/2 inch hole through a 36" long telohone pole I need about 16 of them.

This doesnt answer your question, but what about sliding PVC over them?? I'm guessing you want the wood look though, and not just protection for your boat from hitting it.

Not to burst your bubble, although I think your idea is great, I do believe that if you bore a log that way it will split open over a short period of time .

Yep, box 'em. Maybe even make a nice jig so you can cut all your pieces to make them a hexagon or octagon box.
