How you been? I truly have nothing against duallys (other than parking) and my good buddy GLH did break the bank, purchased one, and seems to be very pleased with his decision... I have this rig and won't be towing that far at this point, so we're going to give it a try.... Heading for Virginia Tuesday for survey and test drive... Can't wait...

Take care,

Neil

It will all be fine, wish I could get down there, well maybe when you pick it up we can. See what I meant about the crosswinds, just take your time and you'll be fine...Rob

Putnam, that is the name I was searching for. I have one in the garage, have yet to install.

The truck has plenty of power. With an aftermarket hitch I don't believe I will be "pissing in the wind".... A dually is NOT necessary... But I will take your coments with grain of salt becuase most posts on a Sunday morning at 4:13am are following a few to many....

i think your missing the point, its not that you dont have plenty of power, its will you stop when you need to, or make a move when you need to and will your truck follow. a 2500 or a 250 is not the right set up.. good luck with whatever you do...stecz

Whats the load rating on that truck? Whats the total weight of boat and trailer? That should tell you everything you need to know right there. I know there are a lot of people towing big boats with 3/4 ton trucks, but that doesn't make it safe.

I find it suprising how often this exact thread pops up, as if people are trying to find justification for a bad idea.

NOT TRUE IN THIS SITUATION......

I started this thread for clarification between weight carrying and weight distributing.... The manufacturer claims the truck can tow 12000#, however that is weight distributing, weight carrying is only 7500#. A learning experience for me was all I was looking for.... Not something I've had to be concerned with before, and until someone brought it to my attention....

Thank you all for your posts, they've been very helpful.

Your truck as it relates to pulling a trailer like your talking about is rated at #12,000 as per picture # 1 taken from the Chevy site here.
http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado/specifications/

I have no idea where you came up with #7500 but the numbers in that chart are with the equipment that is on your truck now.

I am sure adding stuff might help but as for GM's and insurance liability if the truck is rated at #12k it is #12K no matter what other dodas you put on it. I would even venture modifying it mught bring you more into no mans land liability wise.

Weight dist. is NOT a fifth wheel, I don't know what you mean by sway bars but here is the text as it relates to weight distribution again from the Chevy site.

"BALL HITCH TRAILERING: There are two types of ball hitches. A weight-carrying hitch consists of a ball and coupler with no means to distribute the hitch weight. It is used primarily for lightweight trailers. Heavier trailers, however, require a weight-distributing hitch, which uses spring bars to transfer some of the hitch weight forward onto the tow vehicle's front axle and rearward onto the trailer's axle(s)."
