threaded insert for fiberglass?
ive got a wallered out screw hole that was used to mount a latch in my cabin. i replaced it with a larger screw but the first time out it pulled out again.
i know im not the only one this has happened to.
how did you fix it? does someone make an insert for fiberglass similar to but different then those plastic sheetrock anchors or will those work? maybe something that expands the o.d. when a screw is installed?

If the piece it is screwing to is open on the back side you can rivet it and it aint going anywhere then. rivets dont work very well though unless they can go all the way through the material and form a mushroom on the backside. they do make threaded insterts that rivet in too if you want it to be easily removalbe in the future.

mix yourself up a small amount of marine-tex and fill the hole up.....then just re-drill a new hole when its setup

Or if you want a cheap and easy fix.......get some 5min epoxy and some toothpics. Mix it up...coat the toothpicks to fill the hole.....and when dry 5min later clip off the extra toothpics and the screw will have plenty to bite on

If you can get to the back side why not put a machine screw and nylock nut on it? You minght as well change out all the screws so they match.

Yes, there are all kinds of thread inserts available. Go to www.mcmaster.com, and search for thread inserts. You will find all types such as the attached picture.

Re: threaded insert for fiberglass?
thanks for all the suggestions guys.
cant get to the back side so a rivet may work if i can get one with a long enough grip range. need to take some measurements.
maybe using an insert isnt the best way to go. if it pulled out ide have a huge hole to deal with.
fixing the hole with marine-tex sounds good too.
