What oil should I use for my 454

Re: What oil should I use for my 454
We called Mercruiser Racing yesterday to get their oil recommendation:
On 525 and lesser hp : Merc 25-40 (not surprising)
On 600sci, 850sci and 1075sci: KENDALL 20W50 GT1 on 20 hour oil changes.
I'm sticking with dino dung!
I've come to a conclusion, after asking the question many times: The synthetics offer no advantage on 20 hour oil change intervals. No added protection, no hp advantage. Now, push them to 50 hours and you may see less viscosity loss from sheardown using synthetics. I'll never know, because I ALWAYS change oil at 20 hours or less.

Sterling Engines uses Mobil-1...what's the name of that "other" company that begins with an "M"?
Begining and end of discussion....

But you do want to smell your oil if you run a blower and change it if it is heavily contaminated.
My point is not testing synthetic oil is not a great reason to preclude one from not using it. Sterling did the testing for them as far as I am concerned.
If Illmor and Sterling are "synthetic compatible" why wouldn't the Merc's be?
Now I do know of one synthetic htat does wierd things when exposed to gasoline. I am not here to bash...but Mobil-1 is tested by a guru in the industry.
I know Teague is a 30,40 or 50 wt guy...even he is not into the Merc. 25W-40. Lots of opinions and lots of myths.
One fact...Illmor and Sterling tested Mobil-1 15W-50 and gave it the green light from discussion I have had with their techs.
As always...use what you like...but let the facts speak for themselves. 20W-50 Kendall is not even discussed anymore on Bob's site. It's parent company which I believe is Conoco as the result of a merger; makes all different oils under different labels. Is Kendall still the same formulation? I don't know?

You liked it back then...
What facts? No one has been able to tell me any advantage to running a synthetic on 20 hr changes, much less a premium synthetic. I know they are more shear stable, and handle higher temps. But that is moot if you change oil at 20 hrs. I want the best oil for my motor and my money. But I have to know that there is an advantage.
Why doesn't Sterling run V-Twin or Redline?
This oil does not hold a candle to Kendall 20W-50 or Castrol GTX if you want to use a great conventional oil
