Default MPI motors quit at 2800rpm, HELP!

Have 94 Powerquest with twin 454 mags with MPI's and almost everytime it hits 2800 rpm they shut down (both) and when it gets back down to 1000rpm I can get back and try it again. Sometimes it'll just keep on going all the way to 5k rpm and sometimes it just stops at 2800 rpm again. I'm about ready to just bring it in to a local unkown boat repair shop. It will rev all the way while in nuetural. Anybody know good high tech repair shop around Houston or Clear Lake? Chuck at [email protected] thanks

Sound like a sensor is malfunctioning. Is there any other type of warning, like oil pressure, oil temp or water temp?

Thanks Enticer, I haven't noticed any malfunctions but now that you've said it, I really don't think I noticed/looked to see if there was a problem. Makes sense.

If your engines are linked with a Engine Data Link Harness, and they should be (pre 1996 all twins were supposed to be), one engine may be detecting a problem and going into "Power Reduction Mode" and the other engine is being directed to go into the same mode.

Check both engines for trouble codes. You could also disconnect the Engine Data Link Harness and retest to determine if this is what is happening and/or which engine is the problem.

thanks dave, I took out the Merc Cruiser book and it talked about the Power Reeduction mode if water or oil presure low or outdrive resv. low. Sure enough, the outdrive resevior was low on starboard. Didn't think it was that important as the oil was just below the line, looked in and I could see the switch at bottom was exposed, sooooo I'm thinking that's it. I'm trying to dig up my wife to go with me tomorrow night in the moonlight to check out. For three years these have been great powerplants. Actually looked at the Distributor caps today, thinking, mmmmmmm I've never even changed either one! Must be time eh? Thanks again, Chuck
