Default Timing setting with a decent cam..

I am running 502's with 550 lift and 230 240 duration. How much total timing can I safely run?

Which module would be a best fit for me. I need at least 14 at an idle, 16 would be better yet.

My current modules are the V8 24's. With a 14 inital that would put me at 38 total. Is that too much timing?

The motors are pretty stock one has forged pistons one does not. Heads have been pocket ported and gasket matched. I'm running air gap intakes and holley 850's.

I know in a car motor this would be fine.

Thanks Rob

I can't help you with which module would be better for you but I would set it so 36* is full advance.

12 dyno pulls on my 540s with aluminum heads 9.3 to 1 and 89 octane proved 35* to be the best combination

Get the v-6 module and set total advance to 34. That gives you a safety margin with poor quality gas and the difference in top end hp is unnoticable. Initial works out at about 16.

I read the V6 module will only give me 6 to 10 adavnce. I would have to be at 24 initial.

Looks like the best I can do is the V8 20 I could set inital at 14. Problem I have at 14 is idle is a little rough. I would actuall like to see 18 initial.

Does anyone have some V6 modules or the 20's.

Thanks Rob

Sorry about the missinformation. Performance cams like lots of initial timing. It smooths the idle and makes low end responce better. I'm running mine locked at 34 all the time. 236/240 cams in 540's. It ate a lot of starters last year so I got some start retard boxes from MSD. Yours should be fine at 22.

Last year I ran the standard mini starters. This year I bought 2 high torque mini starters. Along with the retard boxes, I'm hoping for trouble free boating.
