I've got a 168 tooth SFI rated aluminum flywheel, neutral balance, tried it on a hot cammed small block boat and alpha drive, but lack of momentum coupled with bad idle charactistics of cam casused excessive stalling, so I had to switch to a 30 lb steel wheel. Currently building a 540 with neutral (interal) balance and was wondering if the higher mass of the 540 coupled with a soft shift trans would work. Would like to save the cost and weight of a new flywheel.

I have a 15lb. Hays aluminum 168 tooth neutral balance flywheel on on my 509 with a 244 deg. int. duration (@.050") cam and I don't have any idle or stalling problems. I say try it.

I was told they work better on a jet boat. I have one that was externally balanced to a 572, that I'm not going to use. It can be re-balanced and weights can be removed. If anyone needs it let me know. Sometimes a smaller motor with a big cam needs the enertia of a heavy flywheel to idle well. A light flywheel gives better throttle responce. Has anyone ever tried running a 153 tooth flywheel, and change the starter to straight across bolt pattern? BBB
