454 Head Suggestions
I need cylinder head and manifold suggestion for a Gen V 454 +.030 with 2399F pistons, zero decked and balanced. The cam is a hydraulic roller 230/236, 0.587/0.612, 112 cl with a Pete Jackson gear drive. The motor is going in a Baja 226 Sport with a Bravo 1 drive. I have a set of #781 heads, but I don't think they will work. What do you think?

Re: 454 Head Suggestions
I dont think the 781's will work on a Gen 5 engine but if they will, they will work fine, AFTER they get a lot of work. Those heads will need bigger valves, 1.88 exhausts and 2.19 or 2.25 intakes. Hardened seats on the exhausts. Then some good bowl work and they should be good to go. Use inconel exhausts and severE duty intakes and the right springs. You will also likely need guides and the spring pockets cut for the right height. Also spring cups to replace the rotators. By the time you are done with this, you will have close to what a new set of Edelbrock Aluminum heads cost. BTW, Ive done all this before. Should have bought new.

I have a set of gen vi heads off of a 502 mag efi with rectangular ports. If you are interested send me a pm. I also have the rockers, keepers, and valve covers.

I agree those heads should work great. I just rebuilt a set of 820's. They are very similar to those heads but have a smaller combustion chamber for more compresion. I used 1.88 & 2.19 valves. I am still getting back together and wont know the results until spring.

Re: 454 Head Suggestions
Look hard at a new set you can spend a lot of money and still have a old set of heads. Sell the gear drive spend that money on a good roller chain buy a new set of big ovals or small rectangular port heads. Nothing wrong with those heads clean up the ports match them to your gaskets and don't try to repair them if they are worn out.

Re: 454 Head Suggestions
Thanks for the relaies. The heads have been reworked with 2.19/1.88 valves. Valves were unshrouded and the bowls blended. Intakes were gasket matched.
What should the spring pressure be for running a hydraulic roller? I think the springs are at 160# seat pressure.
