Default Pulling Motors ...

I am going to pull both motors next week in my 311 ... Never done it ... Port motor has oil consumption issues . Starboard is OK but going to pull it anyway so we can re-rig some stuff and paint the Bilge. Would appreciate some tips and suggestions. We plan on getting everything ready to pull and then a local shop has a boom and will pull the motors ... I plan on putting them on the typical Motor Cradles on a trailer and then back to the house to de-accessorize the motors. Any help (come on over ) or suggestions .. thanks .....m

A few I can think of are...

1. Get a small piece of hose to couple the PS supply and return together so they don't leak all over.

2. If you have the stock Merc motor mounts, try not to disturb the height adjustment. When you put the motors back in, your alignment should be real close.

3. Get an alignment tool. They don't cost much and are handy to have.

Good luck. It's really not too hard to do.

Did you find a trailer to keep the boat on?

It may sound kind of silly, but my friend did this and it helped. If you have a digital camera take pics of wiring harnesses, lines, etc.. so that putting them back together the same way (and the routing of them) is easy. If it is something that you tell yourself to make sure to remember (like that the brown wire goes to the left nut) then take a pic of it. It can save some headaches down the road.

Pull the exhaust first (well ... after you disconnect the battery terminals). That will quickly give you more room to reach all the other stuff.

Yeah , what Reddog said.
I've done it so many times in my 272 I've forgotten. But removing the manifolds does make it easier. Hell , you have a lot of room in a 311 don't you?

Yea, what he said. A ton of wide and close up pics especially of everything you unhook. The, steel your wifes collection of zip lock bags and use them for the hardware for each thing you pull off. A quick sicky note in the bag will tell you what they are for. And you will forget to take something off so as you are lifting, look under. Measure from the top of the mount bolt to the nut and write it down. You will disturb them as you work down there and you want a starting point when you drop them back in.
