Max Machineworx up grade to XR
I have a 2005 Fountain Executioner with Sterling built naturally aspirated 780 hp engines We are considering to upgrade our drives with upper drive kit and the vertical and prop shafts . Are there any comments for or against this upgrade and do you think this is enough? The one thing that worries me is that they are not upgrading the upper gears . Keep in mind the Fountain Executioner is a 10300 lbs boat and the max Torque for the engines are 740 ft-lbs at 4200 rpm. Max HP is 780 at 5800hp . Comments needed.

Running 645 H.P. Sterlings with 600 + ft/lbs torque in a 382 Formula. Dry wt 10,400#. Upgraded XR upper with tower and XR lower drives with top cap by Max Machine. Cryo treated gears in one, standard in the other. No problems last two years, but gears are known weak link.

I have a 4800 lb boat w/200 ftlbs and 160 more hp so its 5500lbs lighter but has 20 % more power and every 40-60 hours the lower gears are trashed or something breaks ,fully upgraded max worx drive, the gears, especially lowers, are definately the weak point.Their new billet lower casing is supossed to help with its dual support bearings but like strip poker pointed out there is no way arounbd the fact the gears only have one tooth in contact under load,Smitty
