Default 454 in my truck acting up ...need help

i got a new to me 2000 2500 with a 454... long story short , intake leaking water at the front.i brought to GM dealer since it came with a 90day/3k mile warranty ..

which paid for the intake job...

now the truck wants to hesitate between 7-900 rpms... brought back to the the dealer and have changed out the cap rotor, plugs wires etc...no luck... still hesitates ...

no codes , cleaned throttle body... ran fine BEFORE the intake gasket change out... any suggestions... this is really frustrating.....

This may be your problem... Seeing how the problem was not there before the intake was removed, ask them how they reset the distributor. This igntion system has non adjustable timing. However, the distributor must be set up correctly, like rotor phasing a crank trigger ignition. You need a scanner to do it. I like to use a Tech 2. You need to get the engine to operating temp., keep the idle to 1000 rpm while monitoring the " Cam retard offset" in the data list. It should be set to 0-2* Just twist the distribuotr until you get the desired offset.

A Tech 2 is a scanner that I use for GM vehicles. Any GM dealer will have one. All of us who are mechanics walk around with that thing strapped to our leg these days. Cars suck, they are too damn complicated.

Talked to the tech at the Dealer and they already did this. Any other suggestions?

I know the dealer told you they set the timeing with a tech II but the fact is many techs will mark the distributer and then reinstall it and not use the proper procedure. I am not trying to discredit the dealer or the tech but you may want to find another shop that can check it and be sure it is correct. It does not take much to cause a drivability problem. I tend to agree with Checkmate454mag. I have been down this road before.

Good luck.

Jerry.

i have to agree with both of you... i am going to go there early tommorow and see what the deal is...i did some research and i have read that the intake gasket is plastic with o rings... sure hope they didn't over tourqe them and crush a section.and that is the problem....

really t's me off... from dallas to here 600miles , no problem... idled just fine ,no hesitation... nothing ...

really sucks... i see this is turning into a big headache...i am soooo tired of people lying..

thank you all for the help....it is truely appreciated..eric

Eric,
If the dealer claims to have set up the distibutor with the procedure I have outlined, that cant be the problem. What do they say is the problem? If you want to talk to me directly, call me at work tomorrow between 6am and 2 pm Eastern time... 718-476-7533 I am in and out of the office, but take a shot at it if you want.

Vinny
