According to Crane they have fixed the problem with the "black" cams. One of my customers just put 2 in a friends 502's and we called them when he was sent the "black" ones instead of "copper" as requested. They gave us a measurement (which I cannot remember) which I think was from the gear to a machined surface near the rearmost lobe. If that dimension was a certain number, it was the new design and should not be a problem. The ones we were looking at were the new ones, so he went ahead and put them in. Have not heard anything bad yet. Crane's tech line should be able to give you the details.
