Stereo upgrade
Just change stereo and added amp and subs.I was thinking I should add a extra battery and a battery switch.Should I get a deep cycle or regular.I was looking at Optima's.

Re: Stereo upgrade
I just did an upgrade 1 month ago. 12 speakers 2 subs and 3 amps. i am running 3 deep cycles from Wal-Mart and 1 starting. It's a great performing deep cycle at half the cost of the Optima. Only advantage is you can mount an Optima upside down if you wanted to because it is sealed. Alot of hype. I have been running these from Wal Mart for years in my boats and they take them back if there ever is a problem, no questions asked..... just my .02

If you added a big amp and a bunch of subs... get a capacitor too.
But otherwise 1 deep cycle and 1 perko 2 battery switch.

Re: Stereo upgrade
series would yield 24 volts I think.
I have always had the perko switches where the common goes out to the starter and accy harness and the hot leads from each battery go to pole 1 and pole 2 of the switch. grounds are paralleled.
I have a cranking battery on 1 and a dual purpose on 2.

Re: Stereo upgrade
I just put a stereo in my boat. 1 mono amp running 550(1000 watt max) watts rms to 2 10" subs and 1 4 channel amp running 600 watts rms(1000 watts rms) to 4 6.5" 3-way speakers.
I already had the Perko switch so I just ran off the switch to the capacitor then to the amps. I figure this way if I kill one battery I will have another ready to go. I have no idea how fast these amps will drain the battery but I have about an hour of "test time" so far and the cap readout has only went from 12.4 volts to 12.1.

Re: Stereo upgrade
If you have two or more batteries for your stereo get some lengths of "0" cable. Run them positive to positive and negative to negative (I believe this is called Parallel sp). You'll have 12 volts coming from 2 batteries. Obviously run your amp to one of the batteries.

Re: Stereo upgrade
i heard recently not to use a deap cycle battery for the amps, soemthing about the memory and the altenator not big enough to charge the battery, any truths to this
it does make sense to me that you would need a certain size alt, and also need to know how long someone plans to run a boat in between stereo usage to be able to tell them what the best battery set up would be
