When you get it cleaned out and re-fill use Aquatabs per instructions to keep it fresh.
BTW treat it like anything else that needs "shocked" I would drain the tank and dump in a gallon of bleach then fill it up and let it sit for an hour or so then run the water through all the plumbing to Kill the bacteria. Let it run dry and flush it a few times. When you end up with clear water that you trust add the aquatabs and forget about it.
I did not find a website but you can buy them at West Marine.
