engine removal hoist- lift recommendation
I need to remove one engine from my cig and was wondering what you guys use to lift out longblocks to clear the gunwalls when out in the field (not at a shop ). the engine would have to clear the top part of the boat on the trailer (6'approx) and the engine block of about 3'. So I would guess i would need about 9' of travel.
I have seen a forklift work, but was wondering other options to use.
I am tired of getting ripped off by unethical marine shops in my area. I am sure there are good ones but havn't found any yet so I will try my luck. I live in rural areas so shops are limited
Thanks

I too am interested. We have been kicking around the idea of building a gantry crane on pnuematic tires for use on gravel. See www.northerntool.com for examples of what we may build.

I did it with a fork lift. Worked just fine. Make sure you get on that has holes in the forks for chains. You will only need it for an hour out hour in... Cheep.

A track hoe like a cat 320 or smaller is the best or rent a 580 Case with a extenahoe works well. Fined and underground crew that's working and talk to the operator give him $100 It works.

I use a shop crane that i got from northern also to gain more height i welded a piece of square stock on it and moved the hook higher to get the engine out. I take everything off of it the whole front of the motor belts, h2o pump, exhaust, and intake manifold. I unbolt the three bolts on each side and the two long bolts on the bell-housing and lift her right out

I've only done it once and we used my fork lift at the office.
I borrowed some long forks from the local fork lift dealer, and we just barely cleared!

I used a 4x4 over the trusses in my garage, wrapped a chain around it and put a 1" hole through the sheet rock. I then went to harbor freight and bought a 2 ton chain hoist. It works like a charm. The trusses in the ceiling handle the weight with out any trouble what so ever. And when im done, i leave just that little bit of chain there for the next project.
