The timing is set without load in service mode. You either need a scantool or a paperclip to jump the A and B terminals of the DLC. Set initial timing to 8 degrees.

A repeating code 43 or 44 could be due to incorrect timing, mechanical noise or induced signal from a plug wire. Make sure you don't have a plug wire touching the knock sensor wire(s).
