He used to, and he actually finished up my heads on his last day at Katech. He started his own business (unrelated to boats), which is unfortunate, because he does good work and is an all around good guy to work with.

I didn't think about that, yeah, he does like purple. No one will confuse my 257 with his 40ft Hustler though, even if he's not flying by at 110mph!!

By the way everyone, Tyler was a pleasure to work with. It's tough for a guy like me, who's used to the Dyno labs at GM where I've got access to every piece of instrumentation imaginable, to get work done in a small shop, but Tyler put up with me, and really made me feel at home.

nice clean set up, very nice.
Is that going in your powerquest? What speeds are you shooting for?

Gongrats on your 454 project---500+ foot lbs of torque is great. Yours reminds me of my cousin's 454's with pretty much all stock bottom end. What kind of things/work did you do with the stock rods? Have fun.

Vary Nice Job Bruce!
You got more power with those L-29 heads than I would have expected. Are you using stock size valves?
You used the stock crank and Hypo pistons; what about the stock 3/8bolt rods?
Thanks for posting!

yep, stock size valves, and stock 3/8 rod bolts. Necessity for bigger bolts is mainly a function of how fast you spin it. For short bursts to 5200, I felt comfortable sticking with them. Especially since the bottom end seemed to be so well balanced (under frequent, extended 4900rpm runs).

Like I said, in retrospect, knowing all I ended up doing to it, I would have gone with a stroker crank/rods/piston kit, but hind sight is 20/20.

Yep, 257 powerquest. Looking to get upper 60's. I'd love to see 70 but that's probably a tick higher than I'll get. From what I was told, the boat ran 59 speedo (probably 56 gps) when the stock motor was new. No it's not a fast boat, but it's a nice first boat and I'm learning a lot.

So, what was the outcome?? What did you see on the water??

My 330 is currently torn down for a freshen-up, and I'm just making some mild modifications.
Cam suggestions would be helpful. I'd like to do a little something, but I'm not going crazy - I just want a good reliable motor.
I figure after I get everything done on this one and get it back in the boat, I'll start considering something wild to build up, and keep this one as a backup.

What was the actual air/fuel ratio you ended up with at the lean cruise out of curiosity???
