Camshaft choice involves a lot of variables. What kind of idle do you want? If you want a reletively smooth idle with good dock manners and decent shifting with Bravo drives, the Crane cams are too big. If you are looking for big hp numbers from 5000 to 6500 rpm's and are willing to put up with a choppy idle and bad low speed manners, then they will be ok. The 525 cam will make peak power in a n/a 509 at about 5600 rpm. A supercharged engine will tend to make peak pwer a few hundred rpms higher with the same cam because boost goes up as the rpm's rise. You'll have to build a good valve train to rev 6000 rpm with a hyd roller cam without floating the valves. Morel lifters, Comp beehive springs, good quality 1 pc. pushrods, Crane Gold rockers or shaft rockers, stud girdles if using Crane rockers.

You have a Bravo drive right?
With a Bravo drive you want to shift at an idle below 1000rpm.
Those big cams are not going to alow the engine to idle low enough.
How much power do you want to make?
I would bet your combo will make 750+HP@5600rpm with the 525EFI cam and idle at 800rpm.
There may be solid roller cams or custom ground hydraulic roller cams that will make even more power and still alow your engine to idle below 1000rpm.
If you want to go the custom ground cam route, contact RMBuilder here on OSO.
Good Luck with your project...

Good cam for iron headed 502-572 ci. Frank (aka 10X on the board) used them in his supercharged 588's and made almost 900 hp without intercoolers. I used them in n/a 540's and they worked great. I wouldn't use a bigger cam than that in a 509 pleasure application.

I definately would not go any bigger than Crane 651 with hydralic roller in 509...They Idle about 800 with no problems shifting bravo's..as stated they have a pretty rough idle but not ridiculous....nothing like my old 280/288 .785" on 115 in old 632" motor...that was a nasty, nasty, cam...... still loped at 3500 rpm....

If you're considering the Solid roller cam route, another good blower cam from Nickerson is a 252/258 .680/.708" on 114.

We typically run Comp 929 or Isky 8005A SP springs set up around 160 on the seat, Crane Gold or Comp Pro Magnum rockers, and Crane or Comp roller lifters. I've heard great things about the Morels but don't know anyone running them yet. The above routinely revs to 6500 with no issues.....

I would like to keep the rpms around 5700 but that still sound like you have found a nice combo.

Crane 741 would not be a bad Cam choice if you want off the shelf cam for ~5700rpm...

What is really the difference between the 525EFI version (114deg) of the 741 and the original (112deg)?

Performance, fuel efficiency etc etc???

Typically, a tighter LSA will shift the torque curve to higher rpm.

Your 509 will like the 114 with blower, also idle better than 112....
