On a stock gen V HP500C, there's a windage tray (I hope this is the correct term) that is bolted to the center studs on main caps 3 and 4. I have a 10qt Hardin "XS" pan which has a tray bolted to the interior of the pan.

Am I correct in assuming the stock tray is not used with the Hardin pan?

My other assumption is the stock bolts that have the mounting studs for the tray will not pose an interference problem with the Hardin tray - hopefully this is correct also. The Hardin literature makes no mention of the bolts needing to be changed out.

Have you tried contacting Hardin, or whoever makes it? I would think they would know. I always thought a lot of those aftermarket pans come with their own integrated windage trays. If you are in the process of building an engine, I would test fit the pan with the main caps and studs in place before doing any machine work to the block. If you end up having to swap out the studs for bolts you may or may not need to have the mains align honed. I think this is usually only necessary if you switch from main bolts to main studs, but I would check just to be sure. Of course, you could also probably just take a cutoff wheel to the studs sticking out of the bolt heads.

Chop the studs off with a band saw or whatever you have access to. You don't need them hanging down collecting oil for the crank to pick back up anyhow. I'd cut them even if they did clear...

I would replace them with a standard type bolt, cutting them off could weaken its strength jmo

I had protruding studs left over from a dry sump segmented pan on the main studs.
We put the studs in a lathe and cut them off.

I called Hardin with that exact question . The stock windage tray is not reused and I went with new ARP main bolts and an align hone .
