Default TRS Drvie , play in Gimble

Ok, looking at a boat. Is I grab the bottom of the drive around the skeg, the whole drive assemble moves in towards the transom and back out again. There is a shaft I guess that runs verticle in the gimble. The play seems to be in the top of the shaft.

Is this serious? Can I use the boat like this?

What does it take to fix???

Thanks

It probably needs a new gimble ring and the bushing and bearings in the transom plate replaced. Does it have external steering? if not the steering must be loose too. It needs to be fixed. There may be other things related to transom assy.it will need. You should get some familiar with repairing that look at it with you.

I just took a quick look. # 42385a 7 is a gimble ring kit it sells for $1135. the kit contains most of what you need. There may be other parts to complete the job. It takes the better part of a day or more to change. You should check the output bearing in the trans and should change the bellows and oil hose too. There is a couple of ways to go about fixing it. Where do you due you boating?

Also, set up is a 468-550 HP with Borg Trans into the TRS drive. We boat on Lake Erie and on the rivers of Pittsburgh.

Can I leave the motor and trans in the boat and take off the drive and outer ring?

The motor and trans can stay in the boat. All your work is to be outside of the boat.

You can buy just the ring # ends A 8 for $896.The kit includes the upper swivel shaft, tiller arm and some other pieces . Not sure would need to research more. I remember it is not all inclusive. There may be additional small parts needed. You will have to drill holes in the to of the transom plate. Its possible they are drilled and plugged already. As to whether you need the ring or the kit depends on what is presently in it. There were different combinations of square and splined connections between the tiller arm and upper swivel shaft. If its been refit it may have the newer combo. if not you will need the kit. There is a link floating around outline this job. A bravo swivel job is generally the same precedure.
