There's a place on the other side of the state, Great Lakes Charter Training (i think) that offers the class for under $1000, $895 I think.
When I read the regulations, you can get experience on a much smaller boat. If you own a pleasureboat and can meet the required hours on your own boat, you're good for a 25 ton, and if that boat is over 10 ton, you're good for a 50 ton, or something like that. For a real 100 ton, you need real experience on something fairly large, though.
80 hours in class, a test, a physical, and it's only good for 5 years, IIRC. Then you need to pass the test and physical again, and of course pay more fees.
Don't quote me on the exact numbers, i'm speaking from memory. I was going to get one a couple years back, but it wasn't quite worth it.
