DMAX,
I had my 502 rebuilt and it was already .030 over, so instead of going to the next size (.060). my builder suggested having custom pistons .035 over made because he said it would leave me room to go even bigger at the time of next rebuild, and that .060 was the "safe" limit on my block. I think the pistons took 4 weeks to get and cost $650. So I did it. This way if it needs to be bored again, I can safely do it.

I have 2 sets of gently used JE 4.500 pistons which would make your 502s 509s.$500 for all 16

That is a really good deal.

I had the same problem with JE earlier this year. No pistons in stock and was told a 8-12 week delay. This was in February. I called Bob Teague and he had some .030 mini domes in stock for a 6.385 rod, so I bought two sets and two sets of Manley rods from him. You may want to give him a call to see what he has on the shelf!

My guess would be Mahle is making the GM branded pistons now.

Ross, SRP, Probe, even TRW/Speed pro will all have a high quality compression comparable piston to wha the originals were. they don't only have to come from the OE manufacturer to be correct.

As fa as going .034 over, have you checked to see if there are .040 oversize available? That is a less common but still off the shelf oversize for many engines. Possibly 502 as well?

this is ok if you have carb motors he has 502 efi s the early style system . not a real lot you can do before you remap the computor. he is just way better off going .030 .040 and putting it back together

4.500 minus 4.467 = .033
