Default power steering pump - broken stud

'89 7.4L
I have a broken stud on my power steering pump. It's the one that goes into the slotted bracket and allows you to rotate the pump/reservoir and tension the belt. (hope that makes sense)

The stud appears to have a hex shaped flange that protrudes about an 1/8 inch. Can I put a wrench on this and remove it and replace it? Will I end up with power steering fluid all over the place if I do remove it?
Or is this a situation best solved by replacing the whole pump/reservoir? Can a standard automotive pump be used or is this an ignition protected item? (doesn't seem like it)

Thanks,
Kevin

You can take it out without losing fluid. It is a very common problem.

Kevin,
Had the same thing happen to me twice. I was on a weekend out and found it broken. I went to an auto parts store and picked up an exhaust stud, added two washers and it has been in there for about 5yrs. You can pull it without a problem, blind hole..
Hope this helps.
Dick

Went through the same thing on one of my Merc 800SC's with a blue pump. I stopped by my friends car repair shop, told him what happened and left 5 minutes later with a stud he removed from an old pump. Problem solved!

Thanks for the replies. I'll pick one up tonight and give it a shot.
