502 carb linkage

I was looking in my engine compartment and i noticed that a linkage was not hooked up on the port side of the carbeurator. It appears a screw had come loose and a small plate with the attachment screw was laying there. the linkage was just dangling. The boat seemed to run fine without this. What is this for? I reconnected it how it seemed like it should go. engine is 502 mag carb. 1993
