525SC maintenance questions
Getting ready to do my seasonal maintenance, & I have a couple of questions regarding the 525SC.
What type of oil goes in the blower, how much, & is it in the front & back of the housing?
What is the best method for draining the oil out of the blower, or is it easier to use a suction gun?
What is the best weight oil for the engine? In my Donzi, I always used Quicksilver 20 / 50, but would that be ok for the SC motor?
I'm also looking for a part # number for the blower belt, perhaps a Gates #, or someting thru NAPA. The belt looks fine, but it's just something I want to change & then I'll have a spare...Just in case...
Thanks for any input...

Ranger, you should consult your manual on blower oil as different manufacturers use different types of oil. Kenne Belle uses Red Line synthetic SAE 50, B&M/Holley uses 75-80 gear oil or equivalent so don't guess on this subject. Find out exactly what's in there and use the same again otherwise you may be buying a new blower. As for engine oil, Valvoline VR1 race is my choice, 20W50 is great. Your location could dictate a straight 50 but let your engine warm up good before you hammer down. And for the belt. Just take it off and match it up at Napa like you said. They have all lentghs and rib counts when it comes to serpentines. Napa also has a specific Marine Parts catalog for Merc and Omc including Volvo-Penta. Hope this helps. Dave

In the blower I use Royal Purple 75w90 front and back, Front has a dipstick, back has a fill/drain hole. A really small tube on a syringe or hooked to your oil change pump or vacuum sucker will work. In my Merc maintenance supplement it says to use Merc's SAE 40, (or 20w50) which may not be the best choice anymore since oil is different since that book was published. I have been running Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 for 3 seasons now and have had no issues, (I still have the original flat tappet hydraulic cam). You can get the 10 rib belts at NAPA, measure the length or bring it in and match it up. There are a lot of threads and opinions on oil here, you might want to search and decide what brand/weight you feel comfortable putting in your motor.

I ran Merc Hi perf gear lube(drive lube) in my 525SC blower. It is what was spec'd in the 525Sc manual. It only takes about 4-6 ounces in each side. You have to suck it out. I used a syringe with some flexible tubing. The dipstick measurement is taken with it unscrewed filled to the notch. Change it at least every 50 hrs.
I ran Mobil 1 15-50 in my engine. It had 500hrs on it and was still going strong.
You can take the belt into Napa and they can measure it. They are only about $40 from Napa. I don't have the number anymore, but it might be in my old posts.
For lots more info, use the advanced search option and search for posts under my screen name and 525SC.

I really appreciate all the input, it reallys helps alot. I don't have the Mercruiser manual for this engine, so that leaves a few things questionable, but the power of OSO came thru for me again...
Thank you
