What Balancer (Damper) are people using?
G'day again all,
Does everyone still just run the standard 8" GM Balancer / Damper on their Ext Balanced BBC?
I ask because I have just realised I have a Mk 4 Balancer on my Gen VI 454, only diff I can figure is timing mark vs timing tape in degrees. The one I have is a bit rusty and worn though and I am looking to replace it. I was wondering if I should go a TCI 8" Rattler or just replace it with a GM Gen VI 7.4, 8" Balancer?
What does everyone / anyone else think?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

the dampers on all ext big blocks are the same, flywheels different on the gen IV vs gen V/VI at the rpm we run I run a std gm balancer...now on my top sportsman race car we run a ATI superdamper....Rob

Depends on the power you are making. I don't like the stock GM balancers because of the rubber isolator ring. They get hard and split and the outer ring can spin. For a good stock replacement, I use Powerbond. They are under $200.
On anything over about 600 hp, I use the 7" ATI.

Thanks all!
I've had a look around and as it turns out, Powerbond is Australian anyway! (who new?)
So at around 500hp I'll be safe with an 8" Powerbond then?
Why go down to a 7" ATI over 600hp? Could I use a 7" ATI on mine? (would it hurt to use a smaller diameter?)
Cheers

On an externally balanced engine, I like to use the larger diameter to help with the balancing. On the larger hp engines, I use the smaller balancer because they are internally balanced.
There is no problem with you using the ATI. I think they are the best. It is just not neccessary at your hp level. They also make an 8"
