Distributor Gear

HELLO All,
Can you use a stock mercruiser distributor gear to drive a high volume oil pump and a crane 168741 cam. I know this person who just pulled the stock mercruiser distributor and the gear had alot of metal gone. Can this motor be saved by changing all the bearing or is it a complete waste, he had only 40 hours on it. Man this is a way to start the season.

The stock dist gear is fine with a 741 cam and the pump is run by the dist shaft. Sounds like it wasn't mating correctly. Chances are the cam gear is toast as well.
