Default Engine storage

I've decided to keep a spare short block in the garage just in case one of my primary engines goes south. Assuming it is assembled and I've used the oil/cam lube required for assembly, how long can I store it before I need to pull it apart and re-lube the bearings, etc? Or should I store it unassembled?

I would assemble the motor using white grease on all the moving parts. Put a light coat on the cam, lifters, rod & main journals, cylinder bores, timing chain, ect. The white grease is not as thick as wheel bearing grease but it won't run off the parts its put on like oil will, and it will keep the important parts from rusting. I would then seal the motor up in plastic to prevent any dust getting in it and store it in a dry place where the temperature is consistant to prevent any condensation from building up inside. Store it as long as you like and when you are ready to use it just put it in & fire it up! The small amount of white grease that was used will just mix with the oil & cause no harm. I put engines togeather like this all the time. Good luck !!

Cool

One other thing either dont tighten down the rocker arms (all of them loose) or turn the engine over once a month so that some of the springs are not constantly compressed.

Also if you can wrap up one of those dessicant tubs with it to keep down the moisture-that would be good.
