Unhappy 7.4 Liter vs 6.2 Stroker Rebuild - Need Advice!

So, I just learned my 7.4 liter MPI is finished, and needs to be replaced. The question - go with a direct replacement Jasper 7.4 liter long block for $6,000, or spend extra bucks and do a factory Mercruiser 6.2 liter Stroker rebuild for $10,000, which, I am told, puts out 350 HP vs I think about 320 for the 7.4? The boat is a 22 ft Baja Hammer. I did about 64 MPH with the 7.4, but the stroker rebuild is intriguing.
I need help! Thanks.

For the same money you could go with a 502 or build up a 540. There will be others that will tell you it is too much, but I am running a 555 with 610 HP built by Ateco. Before I changed to an XR drive with a -2" Sportmaster, I was running 84 with a 27" Mirage Plus at 5300 RPM. I have hydraulic steering and it was "controlable". Since going to the -2" Sportmaster I am running 86 at 5600 RPM. I tried a 30 and went 88 but at only 5,000 RPM. It was rock solid on top, but was too sluggish out of the hole. I have a labbed 28" B1 comming and hope it is the ticket. There is no substitute for cubic inches, and adrenaline is a wonderful drug.

For $6000 you could have your engine rebuilt but a reputable shop and have FAR more than 330 hp. Where are you located at? A friend of mine has a pair of 468's that he will build up to however you want them (it). I'm sure his price will be much less than $6000. If your interested let me know. If he reads this maybe he'll chime in!

Get a 502. You'll love it.

With 6 to 10K to spend, I'd look for a low hour "take out" enigine. A 375HP or 425HP 496cube would go nicely.

A take out is a great idea. Find a fresh water one. Go all out and get a 5252EFI take out, $20+k. Solid 80s with that, Solid 70s with a 496 or 502.

Well, I've been leaning towards the 6.2 Stroker anyway, so the Jasper is pretty much out of the question anyway. I think i'm going with the Merc rebuilt 383 stroker.

But thanks for the feedback.

Wouldn't even consider going 383. Your going to be very disappointed running a small block. They may be easy to get the HP out of a 383 but your not going to get the torque you need.
