I doubt the u-joints failed. My bet is the upper gears. I have seen a u-joint fail once. When it did, the schrapnel took out the bellows, causing the bilge to fill with water and it also took out the gimbal housing.

I agree with vinny, you have to be very lucky if you broke a u-joint and it not take out the housing/bellows etc....stuff slinging around only for a second does serious damage..good luck Rob

If the upper gear broke, would it bang and make noise in neutral?

Yes, it can still make noise in nuetral with broken gears. This is because the gears are turning anytime the engine is turning. Shifting selects which gear engages the shaft, but the gears are always messed and turning.

I must have good ears.....heard some chatter in mine while in neutral.....was the u-joint starting to go bad. Also had a gimbal bearing starting to fail...whcih no doubt added to the chatter. Least I got it all fixed before blowing the half the drive assembly to crap.

Ryan I have the same good ear.... hear it making a small noise..... stopped in neutral to listen closer, it went away, and I revved to hear it again, nothing.....

I was only 1/2 mile from my dock, and put it on plane to get back, within seconds it gave out.

Hurricane headed our way, looks like I had to pull her out anyway

Cheers Mates. I'll post pics on Wed.
