540 build help
hey guys,
I have a Cobalt with a 2001 500efi. The engine froze and it now pump a nice mixture of water and oil out of the vent port on on the valve covers. All the water in the oil makes for short trips. opps. aaanny way
Instead of putting 10-15k in replacing with the same engine i figure i sould step it up a little bit. I want to stay under 12k with the build. I plan to buy a a 540 rotating assembly and build from there. I have built several engines but it has been yearsss. I would like some help with things like:
Will a Dart block match up to the XR outdrive 500 coupler?
will i need all new accessory mounts?
Recommended builder to pick up the 540 assembly?
should motor mounts align?
If i got to carb will there be wiring complications?
and of course head, cam, intake, carb, compression ... recommendations.
The boat is a 262 cobalt,
Thanks for any input!
Kevin

I built 540's out of my 500EFI's (twin engine Formula). Used my GenVI block which I guess you can't do but you could find a replacment block.
Ported Iron Eagle heads, 9.75 compression, cam, ported plenum and monoblade TB made 630hp/700tq fully dressed on a dyno. Staying EFI means you will need to ship the entire engine to be dyno/tuned. I spent about $23K doing both motors. Machine shop bore the block, buddies did the labor for beer/pizza.
(BTW: my fuel system was missing from previous blower application...I spent nearly $2K replacing the stock fuel system which you'll already have)
