Default power steering fluid or ATF in stock Merc PS?

Quick question - should I use a specific type of power steering fluid in a stock Merc PS system, or is ATF OK? If ATF, what type - Type F, Dextron, Mercon, etc.?

Thanks!

Use the Dexron/Mercon blend and you will be fine.

Why not just use power steering fluid? I had ATF in mine when the line blew a pin hole leak in it and I had Red ATF everywhere. It made a mess. That Red dye is a mother to clean. A quart of PS fluid at Autozone is the same price.

I just put valvoline synthetic P/S fluid in mine and it has never worked so good, and as the other guy said, this stuff is clear. You can see the mess

Ya, and a quart of power steering fluid at the marina when you are out on the lake and it is 100 degrees and your boat dont want to steer is $12.00
