Default help troubleshooting a problem

On Monday, during my first 20 minutes on the boat this season, the port motor's drive fluid resrvoir leaked drive fluid all over the inside of the motor well, onto the engine causing smoke and a rather unpleasant mess in the bilge. I shut everything down and started checking for the leak. With all the lube covering most surfaces, I could not find the source of the leak except that the reservoir bottle was covered with lube, so I'm guessing it has a crack somewhere that is small enough to be hard to find with the mess. However, I could use some suggestions on ways to confirm my suspicions and/or check to see what is wrong and how to fix the problem. Also, the engines are warrantied until July of 2005 and I'm wondering if this issue is covered by the warranty. Would anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

Check the cap out good. The oil system in the drive is actually presurized and if th eo ring or flapper in the cap is bad, it can cause that to happen.

Thanks I'll check. My mechanic said the system was not pressurized and that it could only be caused by a bad hose or a cracked reservoir. But, he didn't seem that knowledgeable.

Paul,

The problem might be a water leak in your outdrive. If a seal is bad and water is introduced into the lubrication system, this will pressurize the system and force out drive fluid. If your outdrive is accessbile, pull the drain plug behind the prop and check to see if the fluid is green (assuming merc hi-perf fluid) and not diluted by water (will be milky in that situation). If no water is present, take off the cap on your reservoir and check to see if the seal in the cap is still there. If not, that may be the culprit.

Good luck!

Steve

Miller,
The older style cylindrical drive fluid reservoirs were known to become brittle over time and crack/leak at the bottom where the fitting is. On other boats I have owned I have replaced them with the newer square shaped reservoirs.

Side note, I am leaving for your neighborhood in about 2 hrs.!!
